MARDI GRAS: LOUISIANA STYLE
February 04, 2007
Portland’s Blues-Rock powerhouse, Rose City Kings, makes its first 2007 appearance for its annual Mardi Gras Party, called Beads and Blues, this February 17th at the Cascade Bar and Grill. Rose City Kings is pleased to announce the addition of keyboardist, Steve Kerin, to the RCK lineup. Steve hails from Lafayette, Louisiana and is a monster in Blues and New Orleans style piano as well as a fine singer. Steve recently moved to the Portland metropolitan area, making RCK’s Mardi Gras party a fitting introduction to the Portland Blues scene.
Steve Kerin was born in Lafayette, Louisiana and discovered piano at the age of four. While studying classical music in college, he discovered and was influenced by such New Orleans piano greats as Dr. John, Professor Longhair, and James Booker. Steve soon found himself playing regularly with such Louisiana greats as "Big Daddy" Harry Hypolite, former guitarist for Zydeco great Clifton Chenier, as well as Grammy nominated songwriter David Egan. In 2005 he played at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival alongside such artists as Randy Newman and The Black Crowes. He is a true student of the style, and the playing is complex and dense. His voice has the required gruff quality for his New Orleans style piano songs. The thing that will strike you when you see Steve play is that -- in true Rose City Kings style -- HE'S HAVING AS MUCH FUN AS YOU.
