Holler Lives Up to Its Name
November 29, 2005
This article is a reprint from Southbound Beat by Dave Howell.
This live CD lives up to its name, as the audience for this Portland, Oregon blues band yells out at a local venue. Dan “Kingbee” Berkery leads the way on vocals and guitar work that shows a remarkable variety of riffs, including slide. He also wrote all of the twelve songs on this CD.
The emphasis is on straight ahead rock flavored blues and solos by Berkery and harp player Joe “Super” Powers. There are songs entitled “Tequila Blues” and “Coffee Blues”, the latter featuring slide guitar work. That fits, since there is both a feeling of good times and fast playing on this CD.
There are also some slow and reflective songs, like the last of the twelve cuts, “Reckless Sinner” (must be from bad feelings about all that tequila). This CD lets you visit the blues in all of its different flavors.
