Winner of 2004 Journey to Memphis Competition!
July 05, 2004
We are happy to announce that Rose City Kings is the 2004 Winner of the CBA's Journey to Memphis Competition.
RCK competed against 3 other fine acts -- Lori Bouck & The Interpreters, The Randy Oxford Band and Sammy Eubanks. "It was a terrific competition, where each of the bands was in great form and having a good time, " said harmonica player Joe "Super" Powers. "Our fans and supporters were so inspiring to us. Many of them had re-arranged family outings and get-togethers just so that they could be with us at the competition. We needed them. And, they were there for us. It really gave us the drive to do our best", said front man Dan Berkery. Their set included songs from the newly released UP ON IT and their first album, Delta Hop. Two particular crowd pleasers were Put a Wiggle In It and Devil in My Shoes. When RCK finished its blistering 30-minute set, the crowd stood, applauded and cheered.
At the end of the competition, as the judges tallied the scoring results, "we were thinking about how well all the bands had performed and it was very tense and quiet moment. We all wondered if we had had enough of what it takes to be the winner", said drummer Roger E. As one of the judges aptly stated, "Each of the bands are winners. Unfortunately, we can only send one band to Memphis". The first announcement was for the second place band -- The Randy Oxford band, http://users.owt.com/rpeto/randy/gigs_g/portland/index.html. The second place band is chosen in the event the winner is unable for some reason to perform at the International Blues Competition. When the winner, Rose City Kings, was announced, the crowd broke out into enthusiastic revelry. “We're going to Memphis! We're going to Memphis!," shouted one of the members of the Klickitat crew. There was big congratulatory hugs and cheers all around. Underscoring the fact that many of those in attendance are committed to making the journey to Memphis to support Rose City Kings at that very special occasion.
In addressing the audience, Dan Berkery said, "We will do our best to represent the Northwest blues and to make you proud of us".
